The simple version

Boeing started with two builders and one plane in a boathouse

William Boeing was a timber businessman. George Westervelt was a U.S. Navy engineer. In 1916 they worked together beside Seattle's Lake Union and built a wooden seaplane.

They called the plane Bluebill. It became the first aircraft in Boeing's history and the small beginning of a company that would help connect the world.

They built the first plane beside the water

Boeing and Westervelt used their knowledge of timber and engineering to build a seaplane in a lakeside workshop.

They named the little seaplane Bluebill

Bluebill flew from Lake Union on June 15, 1916. That flight made it the first airplane in Boeing's history.

The two B&W floatplanes were sold to New Zealand. They later carried express deliveries and airmail across a new part of the world.
